Hi!
Liz here
. For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been at the Celo Foundation since May 2022, when I first joined as Head of Communications, inspired by the ecosystem’s pioneering focus on natural-capital backed assets and regenerative economics and design (Dasgupta is a personal hero).
To share more about my own background, I spent nearly 20 years platforming the diverse voices of far-reaching communities, whether the avant-garde collective of Chinese fashion designers based in Xiamen, China on the creative cutting edge, to the Nepalese Sherpa in Everest’s Khumbu region, who I helped support through the LVMH Prize and to launch cleanup programs in the high Himalayas, respectively, among others.
Bridging cultures, whether the intersection of East and West, or the subcultures verging on megacultures like K-Pop or crypto, has always been a particular passion, my raison d’être. Which is why being a part of Celo’s evolution these last few years and helping to reinvigorate its presence and public perception with a gentle, deft hand while lifting up our founders, projects, and community to the world has been the thrill of my professional career.
In July 2023, I took over Head of Marketing from my predecessor Deana Burke post-Celo rebrand to help steward a critical inflection point: cLabs’ historic proposal to transition Celo to an Ethereum L2––a now milestone moment for Celo and the greater Ethereum ecosystem.
Not only did Celo set precedent and lead by example, showing other alt L1s the way forward, but we as a community and ecosystem were also able to more deeply align with Ethereum’s economy, technology, and culture.
Last year, from a metrics POV, we saw: 282 monthly active developers (+34.9% Y/Y); 900 builders & 314 hackathon projects; 598M+ total transactions (now 900M+), up 254M from 2023 (+135% Y/Y), with 12M+ weekly transactions; 9.7M+ total active addresses, up 3.9M (+148.7% Y/Y); 718.5K daily active users (DAUs); 47 governance proposals submitted; 7M+ social impressions; 126.3K+ social followers; 10K+ Farcaster follows; 287K Layer3 quests completed; 16.3K+ Galxe followers; and more.
This year, with momentum on our side following the #CEL2 migration, we’ve seen continuous traction in DAUs (consistently ranking among the top three L2s) and onchain revenue (+365% since last year), reached over 8M+ users across Opera MiniPay with the launch of its standalone iOS and Android apps, a proliferation of Celo’s Mini Apps, new exciting funding mechanisms for builders from Proof of Ship to Divvi, and are working more closely with our friends across the Ethereum and Web3 ecosystems as institutional and mainstream adoption move within earshot, rather than moonshot.
And we’re only getting started.
As Rene outlined in his ambitious Vision 2030 in celebration of Celo’s five-year mainnet anniversary, the path to realizing our shared mission (bringing more people onchain, scaling impactful use cases, and expanding Celo’s potential to become a trillion-dollar economy) is truly feasible. Consider the scale of our collective achievements thus far, a staggering and especially impressive feat when taken in its full context against the backdrop of geopolitical tumult, macro-headwinds, and a prolonged bear market.
The very best of Celo––its people, partners, projects, protocol, and primitives––are underpinned by a simple truth: that the Celo story is a human story. No one can recreate the passion of our ecosystem. It’s each of us, our families, our histories, our raison d’être. That our founders are still here, building alongside the community, accessible and available 24/7 since 2017, is a testament unto itself.
From Marek’s attention to detail as a young globetrotter, fortunate enough to travel outside Communist Poland thanks to his grandfather, an urban planner, to Rene’s relentless, underdog mentality growing up in East Berlin, making economy-themed board games out of shoe boxes as a fledgling teen.
I’m inspired by how they, including other ecosystem founders and community stewards (e.g., Markus, Eric, Phil, Anna, Luuk, Juan, Rica, Joan, Niko, Nikhil, Will, Angelo, et al.) carry themselves and lead, doing whatever it takes to win each day with character and conviction in pursuit of purpose and prosperity for all over mere profits––a worthy cause indeed.
As announced earlier today, I look forward to stepping into the role of Celo Foundation’s COO, to bring greater camaraderie, connection, and executional discipline to our day-to-day work within the Foundation, and to serve as a bridge between the Celo Foundation and the community, Celo and the greater Ethereum ecosystem, and Web3 and the world.
Thank you for the honor and privilege, and please don’t hesitate to reach out for anything.
Humbly,
Liz
