Baklava Testnet is Upgrading to L2

Dear Celo Community,

The cLabs team is excited to announce that the Baklava Testnet upgrade is now scheduled for February 20th, 2025, at block height 28308600. This upgrade is a key milestone in Celo’s migration to a Layer 2 and marks the final testnet phase before transitioning from Layer 1 to an Ethereum Layer 2.

The upgrade will require Baklava node operators (mostly validators) to update their clients, run the migration process, and align on a designated block height. This step is essential to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition, allowing validators and partners to test and prepare for the new Layer 2 infrastructure.

Why This Upgrade Matters

The Baklava upgrade is a crucial final dry run ahead of the mainnet upgrade, providing an opportunity to:

:white_check_mark: Test validator coordination – Ensuring all validators follow the upgrade process successfully.
:white_check_mark: Validate network stability – Running simulations to verify performance and security.
:white_check_mark: Incorporate final feedback – Gathering insights from the community to refine the experience.

We encourage all validators and partners to participate in the upgrade process. Your involvement is critical in shaping the success of this transition.

Next Steps

A detailed upgrade guide for validators will be shared soon, providing step-by-step instructions to ensure a smooth transition. Stay tuned for further updates and announcements as we approach the February 20th upgrade. We appreciate your continued support and patience. Coordination and scheduling became a bit challenging while adding support in the Celo L2 codebase for the Pectra upgrade. We are excited to take this next step together!

Do the docker images have baklava tags that enforce --network baklava or should we specify the network manually?

This is not enforced at the docker image level, please make sure you add the --baklava flag.
