[Proposal] Web3 x SDG Event Proposal for Road to COP28

Hi Jeanne,

I’ve had the chance of participating to the IBC during the Paris EthCC Week and I must say, it was one of best organized events in which I have ever had the opportunity to participate. I truly support your proposal, and thank you again for the organization of IBC.

In general, this desire to inform the environmental policy world of the potential Web3 technologies may carry is a position well shared by us at Ecofrontiers. Our research would offer substential answers to some of the questions you’re asking.

I reiterate what Pat Rawson wrote above about a community event in Berlin. We have a space in the heart of the city that would lend itself perfectly to this kind of gathering. I would be happy to send you more information about it if you wish.

Thank you so much Louise for your great feedback about our last conference. The Berlin space looks great and would definitely be a great place for a local event in Europe.
Happy to talk further about your vision and expectations about bridging web 3 to web2 sustainability.
Thanks again,

Hi there
My turn to introduce myself, since I helped organizing the Impact Blockchain Conference and since I will give Jeanne a hand to replicate this first success.

My name is Pierre and I have been working in the blockchain ecosystem since 2016, pretty much always at the crossroad between blockchain tech, social innovation and sustainability.
I have been part of the France’s main public finance institution “Blockchain & Cryptoassets” team for a bit more than 2 years, advising decision-makers at the national and EU level, coordinating a big public-private consortium and most importantly designing new blockchain-based public services (e.g. digital identity, notarization, greenbonds certification). I went on to join several startups and opensource projects to build impact-oriented decentralized solutions, like Wiztrust or Pebble.vote, the 1st fully decentralized, transparent and secure voting system.

I am a lecturer and researcher at SciencesPo Paris, at the Learning Planet Institute (Université Paris-Cité) and a proud member of the Blockchain for Good scientific committee.
A big share of the cool web3 projects that have caught my eye are built on Celo so I am glad to be here and getting to know this ecosystem and community better :grinning:

Hey @Xochitl
I just discussed it with @Jacques-Andre yesterday and we both think that engaging with the ecosystem through a Twitter space or another community event is a great idea and could be a good place to tease the event series @JeanneBloch is preparing.
As you said, the Celo builders made quite an entrance in last year’s report and I am sure we have plenty more Celo-based projects to discover and feature in our next edition.

JA is enjoying some well-deserved holidays for the time being but I am available to plan this out with you and the Foundation team, as I am one of the co-authors of the report and a member of Blockchain for Good’s scientific committee.

Let me know how you want to set this up

Thanks for the solid proposal, Jeanne!

To further solidify Celo’s position as the home of ReFi and expand our Stakeholders, I think it’s essential to have a good presence at NYC climate week and COP.

  1. I would be interested in speaking at the event in NYC or at COP if you see a fit.

  2. Happy to host a road-to event in Amsterdam. We have a good relationship with Pakhuis The Zwijger, who does a lot of events with Kate Raworth from Donut Economy and has a lot of Regenerative themes being discussed. We’re already planning an institutional focussed ReFi event for September with Celo EU; maybe we can join forces to increase resource efficiency.

Finally, we also have an on-demand video crew available with a good understanding of the ReFi space, who just did some recordings for CELO EU DAO (Celo EU x Paris - YouTube) - if you want to tap into that.

Love this! I think this is a great idea. How about a quick proposal on date/time and proposed guest? Would love to engage Climate Collective and Celo Foundation. cc: @AnnaClimateCollect and Liz Peng!

Thank you @LuukDAO , it would be great to invite Kate Raworth in NY and/or COP28. If you could connect us. And we could imagine cross fertilize your September event with our NY and COP28 as well.
Do you have a date for the Sept event? Will it be before or after Climate Week?
And let’s discuss how we can share best Kolektivo experience within our event. Will dm you.

@JeanneBloch is an excellent community builder and as a participant in past events, I can speak to her expertise in connecting the Web3 builders to the “real” enterprise world. I support this proposal.

Thank you Anna, indeed, we worked together. Looking forward for more collaborations!

Thanks @JeanneBloch for the proposal. Looks interesting and I like the focus on outcomes etc. Couple of clarifying questions:

  1. Do the 3 types of use-cases (Energy, Traceability, MRV Tools) have flagship implementations you will be presenting as in-production proof points of these concepts? If so, what are they? Are those use cases unique to Celo or to blockchain in-general?

  2. Did I understand correctly that one of the goals of Stage #1 is to solicit external sponsorship of between 80-160K (CELO, it says, so perhaps half that amount in USD)? If this sponsorship isn’t achieved will Stage #2 not go ahead? Just asking in terms of, is this a milestone or go/no-go point?

Edit 1; typo

Hi @Thylacine, thank you for your feedback.
1/

  • I have identified these 3 topics (Energy, Traceability and MRV tools) as the ones that are echoing best Sustainability web2 concerns. As written, this might evolve after I got enough feedback during meetings with web2 Sustainability corporations (scheduled this week).
  • Our plan is to showcase solely CELO ecosystem projects in NY.
  • To set up conference panels, we usually invite a combination of speakers in order to create valuable content for the audience (in that case, we target web 2 sustainability audience). Usually, it means, having projects builders but also academics and NGOs. We also use facilitation tools such as Open Space Technology etc.
  • Regarding flagship projects and content, we have gathered several valuable survey (from Climate Collective, Curvelabs-Kolektivo…, in addition to the research produced by Blockchain for Good) as a source of information to be shared with the audience,
  • Obviously EthicHub would be a great example for Traceability, Curve Labs report on MRV etc. There are many more projects that we would like to share. Also, we would like to include a broader perspective of the opportunities brought by web3 as for example, with UBI/GoodDollar that might be very inspiring for Sustainability NGOs…
  • Happy to share the draft program here in the next 8 days.

2/ Part of stage #1 is to create synergies and start working on stage#2. This means:

  • Developing partnerships with Sustainability organizations
  • Start creating short educational videos using NY content/use cases for Sustainability web2 professionals.
  • Applying for sponsorship (up to 80K$) - we already have a few contacts. Nevertheless, sponsorship is not conditional to stage #2 but will influence the size of the event. In the next days, I’ll have a more precise idea of costs in Dubai during COP28. Since, our strategy is to focus on partnerships, it also eases costs. I will refine the stage #2 proposal based on the work done during stage #1.
  • The overall vision is to set up the space to create leads and new partnerships for Celo builders with web2 sustainability. I am aware, this audience might need first to understand what the opportunities are. So having a second event will help convincing them. And last, what we call “local events” as part of stage #2 will focus on the emergence of these new partnerships.

Please let me know if you have other questions and/or suggestions of projects that would speak well to corporations/Sustainability NGOs.

Hi all, we have an invitation from the Carbon Smart Summit (Flow Carbon) to partner with them and set up our event at their the New York venue. It would cost 40KUSD.

They are pros and cons.

Any thought?

UPDATE:
Just to clarify. The above comment doesn’t mean an increase of budget. It is just in the context of partnership for organizing the event. Thinking about it, I think it is a great opportunity.

@Xochitl I sent you a direct message to avoid flooding this thread with this.
Should we create a dedicated thread or take this to emails?
Short answer: guests would be me (Pierre Noro) and possibly Jacques-André.
Time: best would be during the last week of August, something like 10 AM PST / 7 PM CET.
Are there any existing online community meetup / ecosystem events ?

Fyi, we would like to introduce Dhruv Malik who is a Kernel fellow and web3 & Fintech tech engineer. Dhruv has been helping us for several months and will be the 3d signature in our multisig.
So as a result, we are changing from 2 sig out of 2 wallets (representing Blockchain for Good and Decentralized Desires, the 2 organizers) to a 2 /3 signatures including Dhruv.
